Tax season scams

As the financial year comes to an end, Inland Revenue will be starting to get in contact with businesses and people about their end of year taxes.

Scammers use this to their advantage and target taxpayers to get their hands on your information, your myIR account, or your money.

The most common way in which scammers target people is through phishing.

Phishing is a form of online attack where scammers send an email or text message pretending to be a trusted institution or person, asking you to click on a link, open an attachment, or call a phone number.

Social media scams

Scammers also look for opportunities to align their attacks with activities that Inland Revenue may be promoting, for example, income tax assessments, employer business seminars; or tax topics like cryptoassets or property transactions.

Scammers are increasingly using social media platforms to create fake Inland Revenue accounts. They may use its brand and logo or fake personal profiles to make you think the social post is real so that you click on links and start sharing personal information.
